Ellington Public Schools uses Teachers College Workshop Model. A typical reader's workshop in 3rd grade looks like this:

Mini-Lesson: (10-15 minutes)
  • Teacher provides whole class direct and explicit instruction
    • teaches a skill/strategy that supports reading fluency, comprehension & deeper understanding
  • Teacher outlines the expectations as to how to apply the content learned in the mini-lesson to independent work
Independent Reading Time: (30-45 minutes)
  • Students read independently while responding to reading in their own books
  • Teacher confers with individual students
  • Teacher works with a small group in direct instruction
    • strategy groups
    • guided reading
    • reteaching/revisiting skills
Share Session: (5 minutes)
  • Teacher reconvenes class to:
    • focus on the work of one or two students that used what was taught in the mini-lesson
    • recap key learning of the day
    • check for understanding
Students are ALWAYS choosing JUST RIGHT books to read during independent reading time
