Ellington Public Schools uses Teachers College Workshop Model. A typical reader's workshop in 3rd grade looks like this:
Mini-Lesson: (10-15 minutes)
- Teacher provides whole class direct and explicit instruction
- teaches a skill/strategy that supports reading fluency, comprehension & deeper understanding
- Teacher outlines the expectations as to how to apply the content learned in the mini-lesson to independent work
Independent Reading Time: (30-45 minutes)
- Students read independently while responding to reading in their own books
- Teacher confers with individual students
- Teacher works with a small group in direct instruction
- strategy groups
- guided reading
- reteaching/revisiting skills
Share Session: (5 minutes)
- Teacher reconvenes class to:
- focus on the work of one or two students that used what was taught in the mini-lesson
- recap key learning of the day
- check for understanding
Students are ALWAYS choosing JUST RIGHT books to read during independent reading time!
